FAQs
What should I expect in the first session?
I like to use a conversational style during the intake assessment to help you ease into the process. Everyone feels a little awkward in the session no matter how many times you've been in therapy. I send more formal assessment paperwork to be done prior to the first meeting and this helps keep the talk more natural. Assessment is important to determine effective treatment methods, but it is equally important to build an authentic relationship. I consider the first session a time for you to determine whether I am a good fit and will talk about my style and approach so you leave well informed. I will usually trip over my words a few times and say something awkward at least once- you'll get a feel for personality!
How can I get reimbursed from my insurance provider?
I will provide paperwork through my patient portal for you to submit for reimbursement. It is called a Superbill and contains all the information your insurance provider needs. Insurance plans vary and I would urge you to check with your provider to ensure the amount works for you. I do not wish for anyone to miss out on therapy for financial reasons and will gladly help you find someone in your network should you so choose. I reserve space for pro-bono and sliding scale clients. Please reach out if you want to apply for this support.
Do you prescribe medication?
I do not prescribe medication as I am not a medical doctor. I often consult with physicians and psychiatrists for medication assessment. I will do this if you request my support in providing information to help your doctor determine the best medication. I will also make referrals for my clients when they are in need of a medication assessment.
How many sessions do most people need?
There is no predetermined number of sessions as it varies from person to person. I tell clients to give it six sessions to fully determine progress. If you are not noticing progress towards your goals we need to talk! It might be we are not the right fit or I am not supporting you the way you need. I do have some clients that come for 1 or 2 sessions because they need parenting coaching, and this can be wrapped up quickly for specific issues. PCIT is much more involved and completed on average between12-18 sessions. This is a very structured therapy and progress is noted weekly.
